Professor of Mathematics, University of Auckland since 1993; previously Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer, University of Auckland (1983–92); Visiting Professor at Peking University, China (2009); Visiting Professor at University of Waterloo, Canada (1992); Visiting Fellow at University of Oxford, U.K. (1992); Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Research Fellow, Universität Tübingen, Germany (1987); Royal Society (of London) Research Fellow, Universität Tübingen, Germany (1982); Postdoctoral Fellow, University of Otago, New Zealand (1981); Supervisor or co-supervisor for 8 Ph.D. students in Mathematics plus several Masters and Honours research students.

Research fields

Group theory; combinatorial theory; algebraic computation; automorphism groups of Riemann surfaces, Klein surfaces, 3-manifolds and polytopes.  Main interest: discrete objects with maximal symmetry.

Director of New Zealand Institute of Mathematics & its Applications (2002–); Vice-President (International) of Royal Society of New Zealand (2008–09); President of Academy of Royal Society of New Zealand (2006–08); Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), University of Auckland (1999–2001); Head of Department of Mathematics, University of Auckland  1996–98; President of New Zealand Mathematical Society (1993–95).
