Mathematics and computer science, combinatorics with emphasis on graph theory, algorithms on graphs and networks, combinatorial optimization, algorithms and data structures, cluster analysis, and applications of information technology in education.

Research
With Andrej Mrvar he is developing Pajek, http://pajek.imfm.si, a program for analysis and visualization of large networks. He presented their results on several lectures and workshops on large network analysis. They won several first prizes at graph drawing competitions (GD95, GD96, GD97, GD98, GD99, GD00, and GD05).
He is (co)author of several papers published in scientific journals (CACM, Psychometrika, Journal of Classification, Social Networks, Discrete Mathematics, Algorithmica, Journal of Mathematical Socilogy, etc.) and proceedings of international conferences. 39 articles in Web of Science, 304 citations, average citations 7.79, h-index 11.
He coauthored two books 'Generalized blockmodeling' (with Patrick Doreian and Anuška Ferligoj) and 'Exploratory Network Analysis with Pajek' (with Wouter de Nooy and Andrej Mrvar) that were published in 2005 by the Cambridge University Press. In 2007 the book 'Generalized blockmodeling' received the Harrison White Outstanding Book Award from Mathematical Sociology Section of American Sociological Association. The book 'Exploratory Network Analysis with Pajek' was published also in Japanese by Tokyo Denki University Press, 2009. In 2007 he (with A. Ferligoj) received the Simmel Award for the keynote speaker at the Sunbelt Social Networks Conference.
Professional activities
He is a member of IEEE, IFCS, Classification Society of North America, The international network for social network analysis, International Association for Statistical Computing, and elected member of International Statistical Institute. He is a member of editorial boards of Informatica, Journal of Social Structure, Ars Mathematica Contemporanea and Social Network Analysis and Mining.
