Emer. O. Univ. Prof. Dr. phil. Chair of Applied Mathematics Department Mathematics and Information Technology Montanuniversität Leoben Franz Josef-Straße 18 8700 Leoben, Austria

Personal

Wilfried Imrich was born in 1941 in Vienna, is married and has two children.

Education

1959 he began to study mathematics and physics at the University of Vienna, 1964 he worked at the IBM Lab in Vienna (filter simulation), and 1965 he completed his studies with a thesis on Lattice and Volume (Geometry of Numbers).

Academic experience

From 1965 to 1973 he was student assistant, assistant professor and associate professor at the Technical University of Vienna. 1972 he became Dozent (venia legendi) at the Technical University of Vienna. From 1973 until September 30, 2009 he was full professor of applied mathematics at Montanuniversität Leoben (University of Mining and Metallurgy) and is now Professor Emeritus.

1966/67 and 1969 he also held the position of assistant professor at the State University of New York at Albany, spent the fall term 1969/70 at Lomonosov University, Moscow, and was repeatedly visiting lecturer/researcher at Universities in Syracuse (NY, USA), Montreal, Vancouver, Waterloo (Canada), and Melbourne (Australia).  For many years (1973 – 1990) he taught courses on combinatorial group theory at the University  of Graz,  and later on data structures and algorithms  at the Technical University Graz (2005/06), graph theory at  the University of Maribor (2005/06) and at the Technical University of Krakow (2010).

Research

He was a supervisor for numerous Master’s and Ph.D. students in engineering (machine dynamics) and mathematics (combinatorial group theory, graph theory, graph algorithms), published more than 110 scientific papers and two research monographs, more than 450 citations in MathSciNet.

His research interests include the structure of finite and infinite graphs, graph automorphisms, combinatorial group theory, and graph algorithms. He is also interested in cooperation with steel and manufacturing companies, which has led to several projects, diploma thesis and dissertations.

Professional experience/leadership

He was Dean of Graduate Studies from 2001 -2003, head of the Computer Center at Montanuniversität Leoben from 1984 – 1995 and is a member of the Beirat of the Austrian Mathematical Society.

Professional activities

Organizer or member of the organizing committees of numerous international scientific meetings; member of international professional societies AMS, ICA, SIAM, ÖMG, DMV.  Active participant at numerous scientific conferences and scientific meetings, invited speaker at conferences in Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Canada, Poland, France, Israel, India. He is on the board of advisors of

  • Ars Mathematica Contemporanea

and on the editorial board of

  • Universal Computer Science
  • Contributions to Discrete Mathematics
  • Algebraic Combinatorics

Research projects

Range from very applied projects with manufacturing companies in Austria, VOEST Alpine and HKM Germany (steel  industry), OMV (oil production), to participation in DIMANET (The European Network on Discrete Mathematics) and most recently to  FWF-Projekt P 18969-N15 on Approximate Graph Products.
